The 3-day cycle does not exist in a vacuum. It operates inside Trading Areas — moves of 5+ points from high to low — which themselves exist inside larger seasonal or primary trends. A trader who ignores the current and only watches the waves will be surprised by penetrations that fail, violations that run deeper than expected, and rallies that die before objectives.

Taylor drew trend lines alongside his date column: blue ink for uptrends, red ink for downtrends. Arrowheads marked the ends of Trading Areas. The very first question before any trade is: What color is the current?

Trading Area Types

Area TypeCharacteristicsDaily ActionStrategy
UptrendHigher tops and bottoms; penetrations at tops; support at higher levelsDecline: 1 day. Rally: 2-3 days. Buying Day lows usually made FIRST. Selling/SS Day highs usually penetrated.Buy declines, sell rallies, expect penetrations
DowntrendLower tops and bottoms; failures to penetrate tops; Buying Day Low ViolationsDecline: 2+ days. Rally: weak, short. Buying Day lows often violated. Selling/SS Day highs often fail to penetrate.Sell short on rallies, buy only on Violations
CongestionNarrow range, small penetrations both waysWithout movement enough to trade for a profitWait for breakout; use 3-Day Method if trading
Fast VerticalRapid markup or declineUp: expect fast precipitous decline. Down: expect fast rally then continued decline.Trade both sides; use SS Day to short in fast up; use Buying Day to buy in fast down

Trend Change Signals

At Tops (Up to Down)

  • Failure to penetrate last high after 2-3 week up move
  • Heavy volume and activity at extreme high
  • Close under top; next rally fails to reach high
  • One stock after another refusing to participate in any further rise

At Bottoms (Down to Up)

  • Failure to penetrate last low after 2-3 week down move
  • Heavy volume at low; rally; then decline on light volume holding above low
  • The day of heaviest support is the Real Bottom

Signal Flag: The TR Rule

Trend UP: Rally makes new high + reaction holds above last low + next rally higher.

Trend DOWN: Rally fails to make new high + reaction goes below last low.

Apply near trend change points.

Column Tracking — Measuring the Swell

Taylor kept four columns to measure the cycle mechanically. You do not need to keep his exact book, but you must understand what these measurements mean.

D Column — Decline

Definition: Spread from Short Sale Day high to Buying Day low.

Use: Get the average decline. Judge current decline against historical average. Forecast stopping places for buying long stock.

Decline Zero (D=0): No decline from Short Sale Day low to Buying Day low. Buying Day low holds at or above Short Sale Day low. Forecast: nearby higher prices for a day and many times longer. Indicates strong support, Higher Bottom.

R Column — Rally

Definition: Spread from Buying Day low to Selling Day high.

Use: Get the average rally. Identify selling opportunities. Forecast trend — all, part, or none of the decline recovered indicates next-day direction.

Rally Zero (R=0): No rally from Buying Day low. Flat close or close on low; down opening on Selling Day. Forecast: nearby lower prices. Indicates weak support, Buying Day Low Violation coming.

BH Column — Buy Day High

Number of points Buying Day high exceeded Short Sale Day high. If no penetration, enter Zero. A penetration here indicates a delayed short sale opportunity on the 4th day up.

BU Column — Buy Under

Number of points Buying Day low sold under Short Sale Day low. BU Zero indicates a Higher Bottom — nearby higher prices. BU Positive indicates normal decline in uptrend.

The Three-Day Method — Swing Trading

For traders who cannot attend the market daily, prefer longer holds, or want to accumulate or distribute positions, the 3-Day Method extends the cycle across multiple days.

Signal Flag: 3-Day Method Rules (Long Side)

  1. Buy on Buying Day at or below previous low
  2. Hold through Selling Day (do NOT sell)
  3. Sell on Short Sale Day at or through Selling Day high
  4. If Buying Day Low is violated — hold through it; still sell on Short Sale Day
  5. Accept smaller profits or small losses on violation swings

Statistics (grain futures): ~100 trading opportunities per future (long side). ~88% gain days versus ~12% loss days. Loss day swings can be severe but are infrequent.

When to Switch Modes

Market ConditionMethod
Fast, vertical upward movementShort-only: Sell short on Short Sale Day, cover on Buying Day, repeat until decline moderates
Fast markup from accumulationLong-only: Buy on Buying Days, sell on Short Sale Days, skip short side

Accumulation and Distribution

Accumulation (Investors)

Do not buy your full line at once. Buy part on each Buying Day. Wait for the next Buying Day, buy more. Continue until the full line is acquired. Your average cost will be higher, but each lot will show a profit, and you have assurance of following the rising trend.

What to look for: a stock forming a well-defined horizontal trend (narrow range) with fair volume and activity. A day of unusual activity signals readiness to buy at the breakout inception. Buy part at the breakout, wait for a reaction, buy more at the new high.

Distribution (Selling)

Sell only on Selling Objectives — preferably Short Sale Day or Buying Day High made FIRST. Liquidate on a rising trend. This gives some assurance that you are getting the best prices.
